That is an interesting question isn’t it?
When I first started hearing “voices” (of my guides, etc.) I thought I was going mad, and that the men in their white coats were going to come and take me away. I certainly felt that it might be in my best interests to de-activate my connection and throw away the password!

I want to reassure you that some fear is quite normal! And – you certainly are NOT going mad if you are already hearing voices from the realm of Universal Wisdom. Are you aware of your patterns of behavior? Some of them are innocuous enough like how you brush your teeth, or the sequence of how you dress and undress. Some of them are a bit more subtle and less obvious. Recently, I was working with one of my clients and one of those less obvious patterns became apparent.
Perhaps you will recognize this in yourself or in a friend or loved one. Our needs drive our behaviors and although we have very few REAL needs such as food, housing, transportation, etc.; we have literally hundreds of other behavioral needs, such as the need to be perfect, to be loved, to be in control, to be right, and so on.
Who Needs Rescuing Anyway?
Do you need to rescue or do you need to be rescued? Or perhaps both? Are you the person who is always taking in strays (like both pets AND people!) . . . Or maybe you are always waiting and/or creating situations in your life where someone will have to swoop in and take care of you or the situation.
Can you see that when you carry one or both of these energy patterns, how it might drive your emotions and actions?
Many of us have a need to rescue – often this is straight from the heart, anyone who is worse off than we are needs to be rescued. The issue here is our motive: sometimes we rescue because of a need to feel whole. We feel this is our purpose, what we are supposed to be here for. And unless we are rescuing we do not feel “complete.” THAT’s where we can make life more complicated for ourselves than it needs to be!
The good news here is that this is just an old energy pattern. And truly, perhaps it is more important to “rescue” oneself first instead of trying to make ourselves feel better by rescuing others. Sometimes, we have the energy patterns of both needing to be rescued AND needing to be the one who does the rescuing.
This is a pattern I frequently identify for my clients who have come to me when their lives are going in circles. This self-sabotaging behavior is caused by conflicting energy!
The need to be rescued comes from victim energy, but the need to rescue comes from a martyr energy. The victims “need” to suffer, and the martyrs “need” to sacrifice. So when these energies are in conflict, is it any wonder people become stuck?
The good news is that there IS a process called consciousness shifting that can resolve this conflict usually in just a few sessions. The law of attraction states, what we focus on the most will manifest itself physically. If I focus my attention to happiness, I will be happy, if I focus my attention to wealth, I will find wealth, if I focus my attention to sadness, I will be sad. It may seem like a strange theory, but observe the people who always think negatively.
Bad things always seem to happen to them. Look at the happy go lucky people, they always seem to have the greatest of luck. You could say that since you think about something long and hard enough, you find ways to make that thing you think about, real in your life. No matter what perspective you look at it with, the law of attraction is very real.
So if we focus our attention to a specific thing for a certain amount of time, we will achieve that thing, whether we wanted it or not. This is the law of attraction, and even though it’s recently become popular, it is not a new philosophy.
What about the things we don’t focus on though? We will manifest in our lives what we focus on. We may miss opportunities on things that we may want, but we don’t focus on.
For me in my life, I would want to help others out, but I miss the opportunities all the time. I sometimes think about helping others, but my selfishness kicks in and I start to think about myself and my own gain more. I can recall a few opportunities this week where I could have helped someone else, but the thought had not manifested itself in my mind while the opportunity was happening before my eyes.
I am going to make it a point to think more and more about helping others that I have the ability to help. I will be looking for the opportunity and I will not miss it again.
Maybe there is something in your life that you want, but you can’t achieve because you are too busy thinking about the wrong things. I challenge you to shift your attention away from the negative things that you do not like nor want, and instead focus it towards things that you want to become real to you. You may find yourself pleasantly surprised at what you can achieve with the power of thoughts.
As many of you know we have had some strange weather patterns in the US this year. I live in Northern California where the weather is usually mild; we do have some rain, but are usually pretty grateful for fairly “normal” weather.
A few weeks ago, I was committed to meet some new people at a monthly gathering and I hadn’t done my “homework” about travel time! It turned out the event was about an hour’s drive from my home (which I had not allowed time for), and on top of that, it was pouring with rain, hailing in spots, the kind of rain that makes it very hard to see out of the windshield.
I was on the phone, moaning about the conditions to my friend Stephanie Rainbow Bell. I told her that I was seriously considering turning around and going back home, and as usual, she was giving me the good advice to do what I felt was right for me.
And then, just as I turned a corner, I saw a beautiful rainbow. It was the full half circle kind that touched the ground on both ends! I was in awe, and as I went around the next corner, I saw another one! And then another one! I was blessed with a total of 7 rainbows in that drive – and as I was driving along the highway, it seemed as though the rainbows were travelling with me. Needless to say, I arrived happily at my destination and had a wonderful time.
But the adventure got me thinking, was I chasing rainbows? Or were the rainbows there to show me what an idiot I was not to experience the joy of the adventure. Or was I going backwards to childhood memories about not having done my homework?
And how interesting was it that I was chatting to my friend Stephanie, who signs all her emails and posts “Rainbow Blessings!” Synchronicity? Perhaps. But I choose to believe I was being guided by Spirit in the form of Rainbows!
In other news I am delighted to say that Anne Walsh and I are hosting our second annual “Are You Listening to Your Spiritual Voicemail” workshop in London. This year it is September 23 and 24th and I am extremely pleased that world-renowned Channel Nina Ferrell, will be joining us.! In addition to her healing work and channeling, Nina also teaches people to connect with their guides, and we are very pleased that her energy will be added to this powerful weekend.
They say every knee shall bend in acknowledgment of the power of the Most High. Perhaps, like me, if your old knee won’t bend then you might need to get a new one!
A new knee can represent a new beginning. I realize now that I did not appreciate some of the things I had naturally until I lost one of them! Being forced to replace my knee also forced me to focus on the blessings a healthy body represents.
I also realized that I had to focus on moving forward, which is important with a new knee!
One of the most important lessons I learned was not to be afraid to ask for help. Was it a sign of weakness that I had to ask for help to get my leg off the floor on to my bed? At first I thought it was – just like so many of us I really believed I “ought” to be able to do this by myself. After all, I am a healer, aren’t I? But as I struggled with tears pouring down my face, I heard from my daughter’s room, “Need any help, Mom?”!
Help comes from all over the place, and I would have saved myself a lot of angst if I had just called out and asked directly for the help I needed. Tough lesson! Trusting in the Universe to provide you with what you need at the time you need it is so important to stepping into your power. Where the help comes from is not important, the only important thing is that you trust it is coming!
Here’s another lesson my new knee has taught me: Many people manage their lives like owners manage a team. When things go wrong they fire the coach and attempt to go in a new direction. I am very grateful for the coaches in my life during these past few weeks.
I realize that life coaching is an important new field in our increasingly disjointed secular world. Just as a new knee can make moving forward less painful physically, a coach can make moving forward metaphysically, spiritually and otherwise easier.
One of my coaches during this time reminded me to stop pushing and allow the healing to take its natural course. I really found this a challenging concept — to allow the healing to take place — even though it is the very same advice I give to MY clients. Sometimes I forget that I am a human “being”, not a human “doing”! It surprised me that I needed to be reminded that when we can let it “be”, all happens in perfect timing!

I do have to say I was surprised this year when the Christmas decorations were right next to the Halloween candy, but perhaps it is never too soon to start celebrating!
Last month we began my Top 10 Tips for setting your goals and intentions for the coming year. The first three were:
1. Make an inventory
Make a list of things you like about yourself, your relationship, or your future. What would you like to change? Take an inventory and start setting goals.
2. Make sure these are YOUR goals
Make sure you are setting your goals for yourself, not anyone else. Often we set goals for others, for example, I want to lose weight for my partner. Or I need to exercise because “everyone” says I should. If you have any “shoulds” in these goals, I suggest you look at them carefully and perhaps reword them. 3. Use Your Values as your guide.
When setting personal goals it is important to use your values as a guide. What is important to you? What goals will you set based on your personal values? Try making a list of values that are important to you then set goals based on those values. For example, if you feel as though family time is nonexistent in your household then set a goal to have family night once a week.
Energetically, 2011 promises to be a very profound year, and the more “together” you are NOW, the more you will be able to experience all the good that is coming your way. So I really invite you to take ACTION on these Top 10 Tips so you will be your most powerful you when 2011 begins!
Here are the next 7 tips to round out the Top 10!
4. Be realistic
Do not set goals that you cannot realistically achieve. If your goal is to lose weight, it is unrealistic to set a goal to lose 100 llbs in a year. However, it is realistic to set a daily calorie intake goal based on your BMI (body mass index). Set a short-term goal in order to achieve a long-term goal. And if this is one of your goals, remember that it is really important to FEEL good, whatever the number is you might have set.
5. Be specific
It is imperative to be specific when setting personal goals so that you can determine if they have been met. For example, if your goal is to volunteer more often then start by planning to volunteer a specific day of the week at a certain time. If one of your goals is to clear out clutter, then set a goal of one closet a week, or something else that is easily attainable.
6. Develop a plan
In order to achieve your goals a plan must be made. Make a plan and consider it your own personal blueprint to a new and improved way of living. Your blueprint should include a list of goals, specific details on how they will be attained, and the benefit of the goal.
7. How long should it take?
Always set a specific period of time in which you would like to achieve your goals. All goals are different, and therefore each goal should be given a timeframe. And remember that sometimes the Universe has a different timetable to ours. So don’t get frustrated!
8. Take action
Don’t wait until last minute to meet your goals. Long-term goals are made possible only if short-term goals are met. Inspired action is the key here.
9. Stay dedicated
A serious problem with goal setting is lack of commitment In order to meet the goals that you have developed. You must not forget the importance of the goals you have set. Don’t give up! And remember that even the smallest step goes a long way to getting what you want.
10. Revisit your goals
If the goals you have set are impacted by situations that arise, don’t be afraid to re-evaluate your goals and make a change. It is much better to be comfortable with the change than to just decide that you can’t do it.
One last key point: HAVE FUN!!!!
If you make all your goals rather boring and tedious you will end up chucking them out, beating yourself up because you have again gone into that cycle of failure. If you can make sure there is some fun and joy in every one of these, then you are much more likely to meet those goals. Give yourself a bit of fun or a reward – for example if one of your goals is to lose weight, make sure you have scheduled a massage, or bubble bath, or buying that new top you have wanted for a long time. It really doesn’t matter what it is, just make sure it is special, and just for you!

I am so grateful for so many things right now. Being in appreciation for the things that are good in your life can change your energy completely. Sometimes it is not easy to remember to feel that gratitude when things go “wonky”, but when you can, it is really worth it.
The workshop my colleague Anne Walsh and I did “ARE YOU LISTENING TO YOUR SPIRITUAL VOICEMAIL” in London was simply magical. One person called it an “enlightening and powerful experience”, another participant said that she “could not believe how much her energy shifted, and how excited she was to finally hear her messages”, another said “the energy was amazing the minute I walked in the door and every day I am feeling more and more connected”.
